When asked to internalize their biggest mental block the individual would deny the fact that they have one.  The whole would say there maybe one item, and yet when queried even more in depth they would agree that there is One Item the holds them back.

What is this one item?  FEAR!  Yes, but look deeply into that word and you’ll find so many definitions:

  • archaic : to feel fear in (oneself)
  • : to have a reverential awe of <fear God>
  • : to be afraid of : expect with alarm <fear the worst>

  • : to be afraid or apprehensive <feared for their lives>


  • a : an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger
  • b (1) : an instance of this emotion (2) : a state marked by this emotion
  • : anxious concern : solicitude
  • : profound reverence and awe especially toward God
  • : reason for alarm : danger

Now, as you can see I can go on and on about definitions of a word.  What did they hold in their minds while describing that said ‘Fear’?  Is it the same thing that kept them from performing better or learning something new?

Answer is usually the “Top Four” -The FEAR of:

  • Injury
  • Embarrassment
  • Ridicule
  • Failure

When you acknowledge any of the Top Four you’ll begin to understand a little more about yourself, and your belief system that can help or hinder your ability to move from step one to step two.  In training clients for some time now the prevalence of Fear is greater due to the unknown factor involved with their new found training environment and equipment.  Sometimes just looking into their eyes after you’ve described, demoed, and finally set them up with the skills for the WOD is more than enough to elicit the ‘cold sweats’ and ‘the OMG is he #$%&^’n kidding me?” look.

Yes, you will survive.  Acknowledge that you are holding back from participating 100% due to your Belief system and Fear level is too high to move from step one to step two.  Acknowledge, Accept, and the Step forward.  You will succeed in this game called Life only if you start breaking down that wall called FEAR if you take that Bull by the horns and tear it up.
